What Exactly is ‘Commercial Dance’?

You may have heard the term “commercial dance” before, but what does it actually mean? In short, commercial dance is a style of dance that is designed to be performed in front of an audience. It is a broad category that can include everything from hip-hop and jazz to tap and ballet. Commercial dancers must be able to perform with energy and precision while still making the routine look effortless.

Commercial dance has its origins in the theater. Some of the first commercial dancers were part of vaudeville shows, which were popular in the United States in the late 1800s and early 1900s. These shows featured a variety of entertainment acts, including singing, comedy, and, of course, dancing. Many of the elements of commercial dance that we see today were first developed during this time period.

Nowadays, you’re just as likely to see commercial dancers on television or in music videos as you are on stage. In fact, some of the most famous commercial dancers in the world are also some of the biggest names in Hollywood. Celebrities like Jennifer Lopez, Justin Timberlake, and Madonna all got their start as commercial dancers before going on to have hugely successful careers in film and music.
